If a loose or incomplete denture is making eating and speaking harder than it should be, implant dentures may be worth discussing. At Essex Dental Centre, we help patients in Essex and across Windsor–Essex understand when implant-supported dentures are a fit — and when another option may serve you better.

What implant dentures are
Implant dentures (also called implant-supported dentures or overdentures) use dental implants in the jaw as anchors for a removable or fixed denture. Instead of relying only on gums and suction, the denture connects to implants for added stability.
Depending on your exam and goals, a plan may involve:
- A removable overdenture that snaps onto implants
- A more fixed implant-supported prosthesis for patients who want less day-to-day movement
- A staged approach that starts with implants and builds the final denture after healing
Results, timelines, and the number of implants needed vary by patient. We explain options in plain language after we see your mouth and any needed imaging.
Who may be a candidate
You may be a candidate if you are missing most or all teeth in an arch, already wear a denture that feels unstable, or are planning tooth replacement and want more security than a conventional denture alone. During consultation we review:
- Your medical and dental history
- Bone volume and gum health
- Current denture fit (if you have one)
- Your preferences for removable vs more fixed solutions
- Imaging when needed to plan implant positions
Some medical conditions, medications, or bone limitations may change the plan. If part of your care is better handled with a specialist referral, we will say so clearly.
How implant dentures compare with conventional dentures
| Option | Often considered when… | Things to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional denture | You need full-arch tooth replacement and prefer a non-surgical start | Fit can change as gums and bone remodel; adhesives may be needed |
| Implant denture / overdenture | You want better stability for chewing and speaking | Implant surgery and healing time; number of implants; maintenance of attachments |
| Fixed implant bridge / full-arch fixed teeth | You prefer a non-removable solution after implants | Typically more implants and a different prosthetic design; hygiene access matters |
There is no single right choice for everyone. We compare options based on your exam — not slogans.
The process at Essex Dental Centre
Consultation and planning
We examine your mouth, discuss what bothers you about your current teeth or denture, and may take X-rays or other images. Together we outline whether implant dentures, a conventional denture refresh, or another restorative path fits your situation.
Implant placement
When implants are part of the plan, they are placed in the jaw in a surgical visit. We review comfort options and after-care so you know what to expect.
Healing
Implants typically need time to integrate with the bone before the final denture attachments are fully loaded. Healing time varies by person, site, and whether temporary teeth are used in the meantime.
Denture design and delivery
Once healing allows, we complete the denture (or prosthesis) that connects to your implants, then adjust fit and bite so you can chew and speak as comfortably as possible.
Caring for implant dentures
Daily cleaning of the denture, the implants, and the gums around them is essential. Removable overdentures usually come out for cleaning; fixed designs need careful flossing aids or brushes as instructed. Keep regular check-ups and cleanings at our Essex office so attachments and soft tissues can be monitored.
Cost, insurance, and CDCP
Fees depend on how many implants you need, whether extractions or bone grafting are involved, and the type of final denture. We provide estimates after we understand your plan.
Private insurance coverage varies by policy. If you have questions about the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), see our CDCP information page and bring your coverage details to your visit so we can discuss what may apply.

FAQs
What are implant dentures?
Implant dentures are dentures supported by dental implants in the jaw, which can improve stability compared with a denture that rests on gums alone.
How many implants do implant dentures need?
It depends on the arch, bone, and whether the denture is removable or fixed. Some overdentures use a small number of implants; fixed full-arch designs usually need more. Your exam determines the range that may apply.
Are implant dentures removable?
Some are designed to snap in and out for cleaning; others are fixed in place. We help you choose based on your goals, bone, and maintenance preferences.
How long does treatment take?
Many plans span several months because of healing between implant placement and the final denture. Temporary options may be available during healing. Timelines vary by patient.
Am I a candidate for implant dentures in Essex?
An exam is the only reliable way to know. We assess gums, bone, bite, medical history, and your current denture (if any) before recommending implant dentures or another path.
Does Essex Dental Centre see new patients for implant denture consults?
Yes. Call (519) 776-7319 or use our contact form.
Can insurance or CDCP help?
Coverage depends on your plan and the specific procedure codes. Bring your benefits information; we can also point you to our CDCP page for general background.
